Design & Technology

If you were to walk into a Design & Technology lesson at King Athelstan, you would see children developing enjoyment of gaining a practical understanding of the world around them. Children are encouraged to take a keen interest in the world around them and question how it works. At a time of great technological advancement, the teaching of Design and Technology inspires children to learn about how things work, examining existing designs and exploring their manufacture. This, in turn, promotes a strong desire in our children to design and make their own functional products for particular and practical purposes.

Though DT we aim to encourage our children to become problem solvers who can work creatively on a shared project. Following the National Curriculum, our DT curriculum provides children with opportunities to research, represent their ideas, explore and investigate, develop their own concepts, make a product and evaluate their work. Food technology is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of where food comes from, the importance of a varied and healthy diet and how to prepare this. We believe that children should have a variety of different experiences including as much first-hand practise as possible. Children will experience a range of skills within their Design and Technology subjects which include: food technology, textiles and structures and mechanisms; through this, children will develop their skills, vocabulary and resilience which they can use beyond their time here.
