Kingston Grammar School and King Athelstan Primary School have a well established relationship where the pupils' learning opportunities are broadened for mutual benefit. In the Autumn term, Key Stage One children were paired with a reading buddy from Kingston Grammar, who visited them weekly to help them improve their reading and phonics. Our younger pupils really enjoyed the opportunity to read with an older pupil and it provided them with confidence and inspiration to improve.
I like reading with Beth because she is patient and good at using sound buttons. - Year 1 pupil
On Monday 20th June, King Athelstan Primary hosted Kingston Grammar pupils on their Year 9 voluntary work. The secondary pupils were placed in a range of year groups to learn about what its like to work in education. The Kingston Grammar pupils were exemplary role models to our younger children and they thoroughly enjoyed helping out in a range of activities, as pictured below.
It was interesting for me to do my work experience at King Athelstan Primary; I never considered what education was like through the teachers' eyes. I found it inspirational and is definitely something I will consider for my future. - Year 9 KGS pupil
The enjoyment of the reader scheme and voluntary work is a shared project between the schools and is an initiative we plan to continue in the future.
