STEM influences nearly every part of our daily lives and is an area of industry set to grow rapidly in the future. As a result, it is an important aspect of the curriculum at King Athelstan, as we are preparing children for jobs that don’t exist yet!
A key element of our STEM curriculum involves boosting children’s questioning and thinking skills; developing their systematic approaches to solving problems. Turn taking and sharing are important factors in all lessons, building patience and resilience to transfer these skills into life inside school as well as out.
Our approach is cross-curricular which ensures subjects are linked with purpose. For example, when Year 3 learn about the Stone Age, in science they examine different types of rocks and how they differ from one another, looking at soil and the different layers of the Earth, then in DT they plan, make and evaluate a Stone Age stew, and in computing they create and share Stone Age menus through PowerPoint.
