  • If your child has been vomiting or had diarrhoea keep them home from school for 48 hours after their symptoms have gone.
  • If your child has a high temperature, keep them home from school until it goes away.

For further information please see the NHS Guidance for different illnesses and when to keep your child home from school.

If your child has a medical appointment

Every effort should be made to arrange medical appointments outside school hours to minimise the impact on your child’s education. If a medical appointment falls within the school day your child will be expected to attend school before and after the appointment.

Absence for a medical appointment can be authorised if evidence of the appointment is emailed to or is brought to the school office before the date of the appointment so that we can inform teachers of the arrangements. We will need to take a photocopy of your appointment card or letter. Evidence should be:

  • From the medical professional - i.e. GP, Dentist, Hospital etc.
  • The original or a clear copy/photograph of an appointment card, letter, email, text confirming the details of the appointment. It should include the child’s full name, appointment date, time, and location.

If you think your child may be entitled to Free School Meals

All children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 are entitled to universal free school meals. If you are in receipt of benefits, your older children may be entitled, too.  For further details, and to complete the application form, click here.

It is worth checking if you qualify for benefits-related Free School Meals for all children (even in Reception, Year 1 or Year 2) as you may receive Free School Meal vouchers in the school holidays or qualify for a free club. King Athelstan will receive additional funding as well.

If you need to request "Exceptional Leave"

Please complete an Exceptional Leave request form here. This request is reviewed by the Headteacher. Absences are only authorised if the request is an emergency. Requests for holiday leave will not be authorised.

If you would like to volunteer in school/for a school trip

Thank you, we love having volunteers! You can come in and read with children in school or accompany school trips. All volunteers, whether parents/carers or others, will need a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. See the Volunteer Reading Policy here. To apply for a DBS, complete the DBS application form here. Please note, you will receive an email with a link from Action HR and will need to follow the instructions relating to providing your identification etc.

If you would like to discuss a problem or a concern

Please contact your child’s class teacher first. They will make the Headteacher and/or the Senior Leadership Team aware of the situation. If you do not feel that this has resolved the situation please arrange to meet with the Headteacher. A copy of our school Complaints Policy is available from the school office.
