Public Sector Equality Duty

The Equality Act 2010 requires us to publish information that demonstrates that we have due regard for the need to:

• Eliminate unlawful  discrimination, harassment, victimisation  and any other conduct prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
•  Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it
•  Foster good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.

What is the Public Sector Equality Duty (the PSED)?

The Public Sector Equality Duty requires public bodies to promote equality.  The relevant protected characteristics are:                                                                        

• age
• disability
• gender reassignment
• pregnancy and maternity
• race
• religion or belief
• sex
• sexual orientation  

Legislation and guidance

This document meets the requirements under the following legislation:

• The Equality Act 2010, which introduced the public sector equality duty and protects people from discrimination
• The Equality Act 2010 (Specific Duties) Regulations 2011, which require schools to publish information to demonstrate how they are complying with the public sector equality duty and to publish equality objectives

Our approach to equality is based on the following key principles:

• We recognise and respect difference
• We foster positive attitudes and relationships and a shared sense of cohesion and belonging
• We observe good equalities practice in staff recruitment, retention and development
• We have the highest expectations of all our children

We believe that the Equality Act provides a framework to support our commitment to valuing diversity, tackling discrimination, promoting equality and fostering good relationships between people. It also ensures that we continue to taking account of gender, ethnicity, culture, religion, language, sexual orientation, age, ability, special educational needs and/or disability (SEND) and social circumstances.

Eliminating discrimination

The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination on the basis of protected characteristics. Every person has several of the protected characteristics, so the Act protects everyone against unfair treatment.

We are committed to working for equality for all our staff, parents/carers and children to meet our duties under the Equality Act 2010.

We eliminate discrimination by:

• Regularly monitoring the curriculum to ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of
•  our pupils and that it promotes respect for diversity and all members of our school community feel represented.
• Carrying out stakeholder surveys to ensure all children feel safe and happy at school.
• Reporting, responding to and monitoring all racist incident.
• Keeping a log of behaviour incidents and monitoring this log carefully.
• Teaching is of the highest quality to ensure children reach their potential and all children are given equal entitlement to success
• Tracking pupil progress to ensure that all children make accelerated progress, and intervening when necessary
• Ensuring that all pupils have the opportunity to access extra-curricular provision
• Listening to and monitoring views and experiences of children and adults to evaluate the effectiveness of our policies and procedures.

Equality Objectives

The school is committed to promoting the welfare and equality of all its staff, children and other members of the school community. To achieve this, the school has established the following objectives:

• Continue to monitor and analyse pupil achievement by race, gender, ethnicity and SEND and act on any trends or patterns in the data that require additional support for pupils.
• Ensure that all children and families within our school community feel represented in our curriculum.
• Continue to monitor staff applications and Governing Body membership and seek ways to ensure staff and Governors are representative of school community
• Offer support in English for children and parents where their English is limited.
