Religious Education

If you were to walk into an RE lesson at King Athelstan, you would see Religious Education being delivered in a respectful, unbiased manner, allowing for questions and discussions around each topic, with children being able to share their own thoughts. Over their time at school, children will have the opportunity to think deeply about different religions, also taking into consideration the ideas of those who do not believe. Children will be able to objectively compare and find similarities and differences between religions as well as discuss their own ideas in an environment of trust and safety.

As children progress through the school, the skills they are expected to use become increasingly more challenging. They move from simple skills like recognising artefacts and talking about them to evaluating the validity of different aspects of religions within our society. They will start to form and express their own views and opinions as they move through the school whilst maintaining respect and tolerance for the views and opinions of others. By the time children leave King Athelstan, they will have acquired key skills and knowledge, with a broad range of their own ideas about religion and should be aware that they can choose to believe whatever is right for them. Our RE curriculum also includes educational visits to places of worship to further support the learning in class as well as other practical activities where children can actively participate.
