Geography

If you were to walk into a Geography lesson at King Athelstan, you would see children actively engaged in open-ended geographical enquiry: seeking answers to geographical questions, analysing data and making links between their learning and life experience. Through our bespoke curriculum we try to inspire in every child a lifelong curiosity and fascination in the world around them and a deep understanding of the part they play.

Learning starts with the child and Geography is a powerful tool to investigate and respond to their surroundings as they travel through the school. In Geography lessons, children have access to a wide range of good quality engaging resources in order to pursue their curiosity, bringing to life the incredible processes and interactions seen in the world around them. Our creative curriculum progressively develops the main geographical concepts and ensures continuity between year groups. It makes links to other curriculum subjects, strengthening children’s knowledge and understanding. Children will develop in three main geographical areas: a sound knowledge of varying significant locations and how the physical and human environment differs between these places; an understanding of the wide range of interconnected physical and human processes which create and change our world; and a good grasp of the geographical skills and resources necessary to question the world around us. By the time children leave us to go to secondary school they will have built up a secure knowledge of locations, processes and skills and made links between the learning they have covered, ready to continue their journey of exploration and wonder.
