Year 4 Trip to the British Museum

On Friday 16th January the children in Year 4 spent the day at the British Museum in London, learning all about their topic for this term - Roman Britain.  They also managed to visit the galleries on Ancient Egypt, which was their autumn topic.  Both were a real feast!

The children loved the journey to and from London and were very excited to see the capital city up close.  When they arrived at the museum, they had the opportunity to visit a range of galleries on both Ancient Rome and Ancient Egypt.  It was amazing to think that some of the artefacts they saw were over 2,000 years old!

In the Ancient Egyptian galleries they saw:

  • Ancient Egyptian containers and they were able to identify the different materials they used, such as clay and copper;

  • Everyday objects which were found in some tombs which reflected the life of the person who had died;

  • Gods and goddesses, who all had different roles to play in ancient Egyptian life and were drawn on papyrus;

  • Good luck amulets which they wore and believed would bring good luck;

  • Ancient Egyptian sarcophagus and mummies.

In the Ancient Roman galleries they saw:

  • Remains of Roman buildings, which showed the Romans had introduced new building materials and styles to Britain;

  • They were able to find out what type of food was eaten in Roman Britain;

  • They saw a variety of Roman tombstones which also had lots of information and carvings on them;

  • They also saw Roman pottery was also exhibited in a range of materials e.g. glass.

They had a great day and the children loved it! Next year we are already planning to visit in the autumn AND the spring terms!
