King Athelstan's first “Hackathon” took place on Thursday 28th and Friday 29th April. The children in Year 5 and 6 took part in a two day computing workshop in partnership with NotOnTheHighStreet.com where they were introduced the world of programming and coding. The children had the opportunity to learn coding language “Python” and created a game where they had to guess whether a coin would land on heads or tails. Year 5, helped by 6 software developers, wrote their code in an online editor and were soon thrilled by their creations.
I gained a score of 1,000 after I learnt how to code the game to my advantage!
On the second day of the Hackathon, the children wrote code using their knowledge of loops, variables and functions to create a “fruit punch” game. The Raspberry Pi (a mini computer) would say the name of a fruit (recorded by the children) and the player would have to keep touching the right fruit in an ever decreasing amount of time. The Hackathon facilitated in a live link up with Not On The High Street.com with over 15 members of the company listening to the children's presentations. This was an unforgettable and inspiring experience for the children, many of whom now wish to consider a future in coding.
