On Friday 8th January Year 5 classes, Gainsborough and Van Gogh, took a virtual trip to Greece as a part of their new theme “My Greek Odyssey.”
The children came to school wearing suitable clothes for travel, such as colourful holiday shirts and sunglasses. As each child arrived, they had to show their “boarding passes” at the classroom door. The passengers then had their travel bags "checked in" before entering the classroom through the boarding gate.
During the “flight", the children's learning was focused on Greece and each lesson was themed as a type of in-flight service. Their geography lesson was on mapping and understanding the terrain and climate of Greece. During Maths the children worked out how much virtual spending money they had for their holiday and what different activities they would be able to afford when they arrived. They also had an opportunity to write a holiday journal, recounting some of their exciting imaginary Greek holiday experiences. During music, the class listened to and researched some of the music and dance popular in Greece.
Later in the afternoon, the children were served with their "in flight meal". The children were offered platters of Greek food - some children had never tried this type of food before. The platters gave them an opportunity to try olives, feta, pitta bread, hummous, tzatziki, olive oil and sun dried tomatoes.
