Inclusion

In line with our ‘relentless pursuit of excellence’, the progress of every child is central to our values. We understand that one size does not fit all and ‘put children’s happiness and welfare at the heart of everything we do’. We have high expectations of our staff, our pupils and the wider community and ‘expect families to work with us to form a strong team around every child’. There is a strong inclusive ethos, through which we ‘celebrate the excellence of each individual’ and ‘empower children with choices which prepare them for a life of opportunity’.

We are proud of our school: Come as you are and leave us great.

Inclusion Team

At King Athelstan children and parents/carers and staff are supported by our Inclusion Team. We work collaboratively to coordinate and oversee provision for pupils who require additional support for a variety of reasons. We work with professionals from outside agencies, including Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, and Social Workers, alongside parents/carers, to ensure a cohesive package of support for children and their families.

Inclusion Room - Wiltshire

The Inclusion Team’s room is known as ‘Wiltshire’, named after artist Stephen Wiltshire. Wiltshire is an artist who draws and paints detailed cityscapes. At the age of three he was diagnosed with autism. He has a particular talent for drawing lifelike, accurate representations of cities, sometimes after having only observed them briefly. He was awarded an MBE for services to the art world in 2006. We chose Wiltshire as the name of our Inclusion Room that all children can access, including children in our Nurture groups. We thought it was important to celebrate somebody with an invisible difference.

“Do the best you can and never stop” - Stephen Wiltshire.

Children are able to access support by attending Wiltshire (the Inclusion Room) at any point during the day. This may be to have a conversation about an event or incident, seek support with emotion or sensory regulation, or write down a worry to ‘feed’ to Billy the Worry Monster. Billy's photo is displayed below.

Celebrating our Diverse Community

We as a school care passionately about developing the child as a whole. We take seriously our responsibility to enable all children to develop emotional resilience and social skills. Our daily assemblies include a programme of discussions around current events, mental health and wellbeing, inclusion and celebrating diversity and other PSHE themes. We recognise and celebrate World Mental Health day each year, involving the whole school community, as well as having an annual International Day, celebrating the many cultures and languages within our community.
