Reading and Writing Workshops for Parents and Carers

We run parent/carer workshops where we share how we teach English and advise on techniques/ activities you can use at home to help your child progress in their reading and writing. There are separate workshops for Reception, Key Stage 1 (Y1-Y2) and Key Stage 2 (Y3-Y6).

Questions we cover:

Reading

How can I support with reading at home?
What do the book colour bands mean?
What is phonics and how can I support with learning new sounds (for EYFS and KS1)?
What should my child be able to do by the end of their Year?
How is reading taught at school?

Writing

How can I support with handwriting at home?
What are fine motor skills and how can I support with developing my child’s pencil grip?
What should my child be able to do by the end of their Year?
How is writing taught at school?
How can reading support my child’s writing?
