Reading and Writing Workshops for Parents and Carers

Last year we ran parent/carer workshops where we shared how we teach English and advised on techniques/ activities you can use at home to help your child progress in their reading and writing. There were separate workshops for Reception, Key Stage 1 (Y1-Y2) and Key Stage 2 (Y3-Y6).

Questions we covered:

Reading

  • How can I support with reading at home?
  • What do the book colour bands mean?
  • What is phonics and how can I support with learning new sounds (for EYFS and KS1)?
  • What should my child be able to do by the end of their Year?
  • How is reading taught at school?

Writing

  • How can I support with handwriting at home?
  • What are fine motor skills and how can I support with developing my child’s pencil grip?
  • What should my child be able to do by the end of their Year?
  • How is writing taught at school?
  • How can reading support my child’s writing?

Attached are the presentations given at each workshop. Please contact your child's class teacher if you have any queries.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
