Year 5 (Dali and Warhol)
Year 5 classes are named after artists Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol.

In Year 5 we work hard to consolidate our basic skills and begin to take on more responsibility across the school in preparation for Year 6.
In our maths work we cement our understanding of addition and subtraction and further our understanding of multiplication by mastering the formal written method. For division we also progress our learning by using the short method. Later in the year we look in depth at fractions and how to convert these into decimals and percentages. Finally, we focus on geometry and shape and acquire the skills needed to translate shapes across an axis.
Our stories come alive in our English lessons. We have packages from Hiccup, sent from the Viking era as well as visits from the deadly Triffids and even escaped lions in our playground! In addition to this, we immerse ourselves in both current and classic literature including ‘Beowulf’, ‘Perseues and Medusa’, ‘Midas and his Golden Touch’ and ‘The Viewer’.
Across the year, we use these first hand experiences and rich texts to develop our writing of narratives, instructions, newspaper reports, myths, scripts and letters.
To support our writing we read a variety of books from different genres, which match both our current writing as well as our termly curriculum topic. These include ‘How to Train Your Dragon’, ‘The Bodigulpa’, ‘Skellig’ and ‘Rooftoppers’. Furthermore, we deepen our understanding of the text by exercising our skills of retrieval, inference, analysing and exploring.
Investigations and experiments lead our science lessons, with children being encouraged and supported to test their ideas themselves. We focus on the IPROF skills across lessons and demonstrate our progress of these whilst showing our understanding of forces, space, life cycles and materials.
Our topic lessons often take on a cross curricular theme. During the autumn term our learning revolves around how the Vikings came and changed the UK, giving special focus to our namesake, King Athelstan. We consider both sides of their invasions, taking into account our own views and the views of others.
In spring term we move onto Ancient Greece, learning about their culture, history and religion and investigate their physical and manmade geography.
By summer term we are ready to go back in time to the Victorians, where we learn about the industrial revolution, the impact of the British Empire and consider how lucky we are in comparison to the children of their day.
Assessments:
In Year 5 we have no national tests but children are assessed throughout the year using teacher assessment. Pupils will be tested weekly on their spellings and times tables and their KIRF skills are checked each half term to evaluate their progress. In addition, children complete end of unit assessments for each new maths topic, comprehension papers for reading in autumn and summer and carry out an independent piece of writing after each corresponding topic.
