The Year 2 classes are named after artists David Hockney and Henri Matisse.

“What an artist is trying to do for people is bring them closer to something, because of course art is about sharing.” - David Hockney

“Creativity takes courage.” - Henri Matisse

In Year 2 we aim to consolidate all the skills taught to us in Early Years and Year 1 to become more confident and independent learners.

In maths we build on our foundation of concepts such as addition and subtraction whilst also challenging ourselves with newer concepts like fractions and statistics. This is also an opportunity for us to deepen and challenge our understanding of familiar ideas so that we can continue to forge our mathematical minds.

In English we continue to grow in confidence with our handwriting and use of grammar such as full stops and capital letters, whilst also approaching new grammatical concepts such as commas, apostrophes and conjunctions. We enjoy both fantastical and true stories and use these to inspire our writing, through drama, engaging activities and real world situations.

In reading, we secure our phonic knowledge whilst also introducing a deeper dive into using inference and retrieval skills. We use a range of diverse, exciting and engaging books, both modern and classic, to achieve this.

Through our curriculum, we strive to deepen our understanding of the world further out than our families. We investigate the histories, areas and science within our locality and understand the importance of our community. We explore innovative design and develop our computing skills to bring them to life.

Assessments:

Children in Year 2 take part in end of key stage statutory assessments (SATs) for reading and maths and teacher assessments in writing. If children did not meet the expected standard in their phonics screening check in Year 1 they are required to retake the check in the summer term of Year 2.
